Conservation

As part of our water conservation work, Bandu organized a voluntary work project on January 31 to build a check dam around 2 km from Chorgaon on a stream adjoining the jungle. Three youths from the village, 4 teachers and 69 students from the village’s Zilla Parishad Primary School joined hands with Bandu in the programme. The resultant body will benefit domestic livestock during the day while wildlife will use it at night. Nilgai, wild boar and sambar are regularly seen in the area while leopards are sighted occasionally.

On January 14, Bandu organized an anti-plastic programmed at Katwal in which 24 students of the village Zilla Parishad Primary School (ZPPS) participated. Bandu explained the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and the need to keep plastic litter and waste buried so that they aren’t blown away into jungle areas. The children first cleared the area around the village bus stop of plastic litter and waste and later cleared the village temple premises as well.

Two other anti-plastic programmes were organized -- at Dewada on January 16 and at Mudholi on January 17.

Bandu also organized 2 community assistance programmes during the month. On January 14, he organized a programme to clear the area around a well at Kutwanda and on January 22 at Kondegaon. In both places water, which had spilled over while people drew from the well, had stagnated, leading to proliferation of mosquitoes and insects. Our teams cleared the areas, removing scum and organic growth.  At Kutwanda, 4 youths from the village and 6 students from the village school joined Bandu in the programme. At Kondegaon, 3 youths from the village joined Bandu.

On January 16, Bandu organized a programme to clean and deepen a soak pit at Moharli. Due to growth of weeds, the pit was clogged and water was overflowing. Our team, comprising Bandu and 10 students from the ZPPS, first cleared the pit, deepened it and put a layer of gravel at the bottom.
On January 17, a similar programme was organized at Bamdeli. In this programme, 6 students from the village ZPPS, 2 teachers and 3 members of the school’s managing committee joined Bandu in the programme.

On January 15, Bandu organized a programme at Adegaon (Udayatola) to follow up on plantation of saplings done earlier. This is to ensure that saplings planted during the monsoon are live and have sufficient protection from grazing livestock. 18 students from the village school joined Bandu in the programme.

Education

During the month, our team made classroom visits to 10 schools to educate children about nature and wildlife conservation.
