Conservation

In May 7, Bandu organized a programme at Adegaon to clear the area around a hand pump. Water had spilled over while people drew from the well. Over a period of time, this had created a small marshy area, leading to proliferation of mosquitoes and insects. Our team cleared the area, removing scum and organic growth and dug a canal to drain away the water. 3 youths from the village joined Bandu in the programme. A similar programme was organized on May 28 at Bhamdeli to clean the area around a hand pump. 5 youths from the village joined Bandu in this programme. A similar programme was organized to clean the area around a well at Junona on May 9.

On May 20, Bandu organized a programme to clear a water hole at Chorgaon. The water hole was clogged with organic waste and was overflowing. Bandu and 4 youths of the village cleaned the water hole. A similar programme was organized on May 27 at Kondegaon in which 4 youths from the village joined Bandu.

On May 17, Bandu assisted in fighting a fire in the forest adjoining the path from Sitarampeth to Kondegaon. Apparently some villagers who had gone into the jungle to drink had dropped a lit beedi which set off the forest fire. Fortunately, the fire was spotted early and did not cause much damage. 5 workers, employed by the Forest Department, had set off to fight the fire. When Bandu learnt of the incident, he joined them. During the month, Bandu also organized a programme to raise awareness about forest fires – how they are started and the need to contain them. He also spoke on the need for conservation. The programme was held at Dewada on May 14 in which 23 villagers participated. Photo below.

As the rains have not yet started and the temperatures are still high, birds continue to struggle for water. Bandu organized programmes to put up pots with water for birds in 2 villages – Kondegaon and Sitarampeth.

On May 7, Bandu organized a programme at Dewada to follow up on plantation of saplings done last year. This is to ensure that saplings planted during the monsoon are live and have sufficient protection from grazing livestock. 13 students from the village school joined Bandu in the programme. Similar programmes were organized on May 16 at Moharli and May 18 at Adegaon in which in which 10 students and 15 students participated.

On May 21, Bandu organized a nature trail in the jungle near Moharli in which 7 unemployed youths participated. Bandu used the trail to teach the youths about local species of plants and wildlife. The trail was also an opportunity to patrol the jungle and check for signs of illicit activities. Photo below.

During May, Bandu made 5 classroom visits to speak to students of village schools on various aspects of nature and wildlife conservation.
