Conservation
On June 9, Amit and Sampath led a team of 9
people in a programme to clear wild growth around a well at Batwar. Due to
heavy rains, wild growth had proliferated around the well and access to the
well was affected. Our team, which comprised 7 youths and 2 women from the
village, removed the wild growth and cleaned the area. Photos below.
A similar programme was organized on June
13 to clear the area next to a well at Kutwahi. Photos below.
During the month, Amit organized 4
awareness programmes on improved farming techniques so that farmers can improve
their yield. During the programmes, the farmers were also taught how to treat
seeds before planting. Details of the programmes are given in the table above.

During the month, the following 4 farmers were also taught to plant paddy using improved techniques:

During the month, our
team organized programmes to clean 1 existing waterhole inside the jungle,
which had become clogged with organic litter.
Our team encourages
organic farming as part of our strategy to reduce the impact of chemical
fertilisers on fields adjoining prime wildlife areas. Part of our work includes
assistance to villagers in setting up vermi-compost tanks and compost pits.
During June, we helped 4 villagers dig compost pits – Shayama Bai of Kutwahi on
June 5, Durga Bai of Batwar on June 7, Khushiya Bai of Chhapri on June 9 and
Savita Bai of Dhamangaon on June 10.

In order to reduce the dependence of villagers on forests for firewood, we encourage them to use alternative sources of energy. As part of this programme, we assist villagers in repairing bio-gas units (set up by the Forest Department and Ajiwika) which have fallen into disrepair. On June 30, we helped one villager, Sankar Markam of Sautiya, restart his unit.

On June 7, our team organized an anti-plastic programme at Samaiya. Amit and Sampath spoke to the villagers about the harmful impact of plastic/polythene on the environment and motivated them to remove such litter from the village. The team of villagers and students went around the village, collecting plastic and polythene litter/waste, which were then buried in a pit on the outskirts of the village. A similar anti-plastic programme was organized at Manegaon on June 14.
Education
There were no classroom
programmes as schools were shut for the annual summer holiday.
Amit and Sampath led children of Kutwahi and
Samaiya on nature trails on June 6 and June 10 respectively. On the trails,
they helped children identify various species of plants and animals and
explained the importance of preserving our environment.
