Conservation
As part of our water conservation work, on
February 18, we organized a programme to build a check dam at Ghughra nallah,
around 1.5 km from Batwar, inside the jungle. Chital are regularly spotted in
the area, along with occasional spotting of wild boar, tiger, leopard and
fox.
The team of 12 included Shayamlal Dhurwey, Forest Guard based at Batwar. Wildlife and domestic livestock will both benefit from this
water body. Photos below.
In community assistance work, our team organized
one programme to clean the area next to a hand pump in Bhagpur. There was
substantial water stagnation from water spilt when villagers filled up buckets
and vessels from the hand pump. This had created a small marsh and water was
spreading to the village road. Insects were also breeding in the water,
creating a health hazard. On February 8, 4 women and 2 youths from Bhagpur
joined Amit and Sampath in cleaning up the area. Photos below.
On February 23, our team organized a programme
on issues related to wildlife and forests in Batwar.

We also held 3 programmes during February to promote awareness about conservation activity in villages. Details are given in the above table. Deputy Ranger (Khatiya Range) S C Thakre and Forest Guard (Batwar) Shayamlal Dhurwey participated in some of the programmes.
In order to reduce the
dependence of villagers on forests for firewood, we encourage them to use
alternative sources of energy. As part of this programme, we assist villagers
in repairing bio-gas units (set up by the Forest Department and Ajiwika) which
have fallen into disrepair. On February 25, we helped one villager, Jiwan Singh Marawi of Patpara restart his unit. Photo below.
On February 20, our team organized
an anti-plastic programme at Sautiya. Amit and Sampath spoke to the villagers
of the village about the harmful impact of plastic/polythene on the environment
and motivated them to remove such litter from the village. The team of villagers
and students went around the village, collecting plastic and polythene
litter/waste, which were then buried in a pit on the outskirts of the village. Another
anti-plastic programme was organized at Manegaon on February 24.
