Highlights

·      One community assistance programme – area around hand pump at Chargaon cleared of growth and spillover water drained away

Conservation  

On April 22, Bandu organized a programme at Udiya Tola to clear the area around a hand pump. Water had spilled over while people drew from the well. Over a period of time, this had created a small marshy area, leading to proliferation of mosquitoes and insects. Our team cleared the area, removing scum and organic growth and dug a canal to drain away the water. A water hole was dug to take this spillover water. This will provide drinking water to domestic animals. 8 youths and 10 students from the village joined Bandu in the programme.

In April 19, Bandu organized a programme at Chorgaon to clear the area around a hand pump. Water had spilled over while people drew from the well. Over a period of time, this had created a small marshy area, leading to proliferation of mosquitoes and insects. Our team cleared the area, removing scum and organic growth and dug a canal to drain away the water. 4 youths from the village joined Bandu in the programme.

On April 8, Bandu organized a programme to clear a water hole at Sitarampeth. The water hole was clogged with organic waste and was overflowing. Bandu and 3 youths of the village cleaned the water hole; a similar programme was organized on April 13 at Kondegaon to clean another water hole. 6 youths from the village joined Bandu in this programme.

With the summer advancing, temperatures are on the rise and birds are struggling for water. Bandu organized programmes to put up containers with water for birds in 3 villages – Khutwanda, Junona and Mudholi.

On April 6, Bandu organized an anti-plastic programme at Bhamdeli in which 12 students of the village’s Zilla Parishad Primary School (ZPPS) participated. Bandu explained the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and the need to keep plastic litter and waste buried so that they aren’t blown by the wind into jungle areas. The children first cleared the main road of the village of plastic litter and waste and later cleared the school premises as well.

A similar anti-plastic programme was organized at Khutwanda on April 26.

On April 5, Bandu organized a programme at Adegaon to follow up on plantation of saplings done last year. This is to ensure that saplings planted during the monsoon are live and have sufficient protection from grazing livestock. 14 students from the village school joined Bandu in the programme. Similar programmes were organized on April 14 at Dewada in which 11 students participated and on April 26 at Kondegaon in which 17 students participated.

Environment Education

There were no classroom programmes in April as students were busy with their annual examinations.

On April 13, Bandu organized a walk in the forest for the students of Sitarampeth ZPPS. On the nature walk, in the forest adjoining the village, Bandu taught the students how to spot and identify birds. He also spoke to the children about the importance of nature and wildlife and the need for conservation. 19 students joined Bandu on the nature trail. A similar programme was organized on April 13 at Kondegaon for 22 students of the village’s primary school.

Employment Cell

On 9 April, our Employment Cell Officer Mr. Ajay Poddar visited Moharli to follow up on the status of youths trained by us in driving four-wheelers. We had arranged a programme in December to train 30 youths in driving four-wheelers. Out of these, 12 are now driving vehicles – some as tourist jeep drivers, others in local transport and one is employed as a tractor driver.
