Conservation work

On May 16, Niranjan Hinge and 9 villagers from Telia cleaned a water tank near a hand-pump in a voluntary work project programme. During the summer season, water scarcity for cattle makes cattle wander near the forest area in search of water. There is a high risk of the cattle being killed by carnivores like tigers or leopards leading to conflict between humans and wildlife. Also diseases can be transmitted from the domestic livestock to wildlife herbivores. To reduce such incidents, Niranjan encouraged the villagers to clean a water tank near a hand pump inside the village. Now the cattle do not have to venture close to the forest area.

A similar programme was organised on May 24 to clean a water tank near a hand pump at Jamuntola.

On May 11 and May 23 Niranjan Hinge repaired faulty biogas units in Turiya and Aamajhiri villages. Biogas helps reduce the dependency of villagers on fuel wood from forest areas and also reduces smoke emissions.

Our team encourages organic farming as part of our strategy to reduce the impact of chemical fertilisers on fields adjoining prime wildlife areas. Part of our work includes assistance to villagers in setting up vermicompost tanks and compost pits. During May, we helped 3 villagers dig compost pits – Kaushalya Barkade of Potiya on May 20, Saytri Bai Tekam of Jamuntola on May 22 and Gulab Gadeker of Jamuntola on May 24.

We also held 3 programmes during May on promote awareness about organic compost and Azolla fodder supplement for livestock. Details are given in the above table.

On May 9, Niranjan and 15 kids of Durgapur village installed artificial water pots in their village for birds to drink from during the summer season. Niranjan encouraged the kids to regularly fill up the water pots with water so that the birds can drink water during the dry summer season. Immediately after the pots were installed, the kids were able to spot various birds like bulbuls, sunbirds, shrikes, sparrows, magpie robins etc at the water pots.

Similar programmes were organised at Jamuntola on May 10, Aamajhiri on May 21 and Potiya on May 25.

In May, we organised 4 nature trails for the children of Durgapur, Jamuntola, Aamajhiri and Potiya villages. On the trails, our staff spoke to the children about the various plants and common medicinal uses of those plants. They were also taught how to spot and identify birds. The importance of birds in nature was also explained to the children. A total of 37 children participated in the programme.

Environment Education Programme

There were no classroom programmes or film shows during May as schools were shut for the annual summer vacation.
