Activity Update August 2013: Kanha

Highlights

  • 3 awareness programmes on snake bites
  • 3 compost pit prepared in 3 villages

Conservation 
























During August, our team organized 3 awareness programmes on snakes and snake bites. During the monsoon, snakes come out of their pits as these get flooded and there is greater occurrence of humans being bitten by snakes. Our awareness programmes focussed on teaching villagers how to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes and explained what to do in case of snake bites. Details of the programmes are given in the table above.

As part of our programme to promote organic farming to reduce the impact of chemical fertilizers on areas adjoining forest habitat, we helped 3 villagers prepare compost pits. The details are given on the above table.

During August, our team organized 2 conservation rallies in which members of women’s self-help groups (SHGs) participated. At Kutwahi, on August 20, women belonging to Roshni, Deep and Lakshmi SHGs went through the village of Kutwahi, chanting slogans in favour of conservation of nature and wildlife. A similar programme was organized on August 23 at Chapri in which members of Indrawati, Gondwana and Mahavir SHGs participated.

On August 11, Amit and Sampath organized a programme at Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) School at Bijatola in Chapri. The school ground was overgrown with weeds and grass due to the heavy monsoon rains. In our programme, 22 members of Gondwana and Indrawati SHGs joined hands with our team to clean up the school ground as well as the area surrounding a hand pump used by the school students to draw drinking water.

A similar programme was organized on August 21 at Chapri, in which 17 members of Gondwana and Indrawati SHGs cleaned the area around a hand pump and well located in the village and used to draw drinking water.

Education

During the month our team organized environment education programmes in 11 schools in the villages in our area of operations.
